Equestrian for those with intellectual disabilities
Byalee Stables is home to a strong. enthusiastic group of students with intellectual disabilities.
Learning, laughing, achieving and succeeding is what Byalee's equestrian program for special needs riders is all about. Our students ride despite their global developmental delay, Autism, Downs Syndrome, cerebral palsy and many other forms of intellectual disability). They are all ages, all shapes and sizes, all levels of disability, and their participation varies from on-the-ground work with the horses (brushing, leading, hosing, rugging, games on foot) to competing in open competitions with clubs all over NSW.
Byalee Stables has a great deal of experience teaching special needs students and our horses are hand-picked to be able to work with any challenges brought to the arena. After years of experience, we were chosen a the Northern NSW Special Olympics Equestrian Program hub and ran the program for 12 months until the State-wide program was put into mothballs pending a review of its operations.
Byalee Stables then stepped into the breach to ensure that its team of more than two dozen students didn't miss out on their equestrian experience and after this, continued to offer equestrian experiences to special needs riders, with a host of weekly riders.
Well done, team Byalee. What amazing opportunities you have created for these young riders and their families xx - Fiona
Great people doing great work. - Kevin
My daughter Sui has been a member of Star Club since its inception. She not only receives high quality coaching on amazing horses but has developed some life-long relationships with other participants. Sui loves to get there as early as possible to watch and encourage the other riders of varying abilities. Over the time we have attended Byalee I have seen a huge improvement within all of the riders. There were riders who had never been near a horse, never mind trotted or cantered, and they are now able to do this. Byalee’s horses are handpicked to match the rider's ability - there are horses for beginners through to accomplished riders. I cannot speak highly enough of Ann-Maree and Dimity Lourey - the patience and dedication they have shown these riders is second to none. Both Ann-Maree and Dimity have spent time to get to know each rider and work with them to achieve their goals. Byalee is one of a kind! - Jannett
Anthony started at Byalee part way through last year with his only horse experience being Riding for the Disabled, but he took to it
like a duck to water, and has loved every minute and has improved out of sigh! Therese literally hadn't had any experience and on her
first day she was very tentative, but since then has loved every minute on the
horse and looks forward to Byalee day. The support from everyone, coaches, parents, and
fellow riders has been lovely and I look forward to our days at Byalee, such a
beautiful, peaceful spot. - Carmel
